Sleeve length is the quietest decision on a commission form and one of the most visible in the finished garment. It sets how formal a kameez reads, how it moves, whether the embroidery on a cuff ever gets seen, and whether you spend a July afternoon comfortable or regretting the cloth on your arms. Tailors will cut whatever you ask for — which is exactly why it helps to know what you are asking for, and what each length does once it is on.

What Length Actually Changes

Three things move together with a sleeve. Coverage is the obvious one, and in Pakistan it carries social weight: a daytime dars and an evening shaadi function do not read sleeves the same way. Proportion is the second — where a sleeve ends draws a horizontal line across your arm, and that line either flatters the point it lands on or does not. The third is fabric behaviour. A sleeve is a tube of cloth in motion; stiff fabric holds its shape at any length, while soft fabric collapses against the arm, and some lengths forgive that better than others.

Cap Sleeve

The shortest cut — a small extension of the shoulder seam that covers the top of the arm and stops. It keeps the arm almost entirely free, which makes it the coolest option for the hottest months and the natural pairing for lawn in May and June.

It suits narrow and average shoulders best; because the sleeve ends at the widest point of the upper arm, it draws attention there, and broad shoulders or fuller upper arms get emphasised rather than framed. Cap sleeves read young and informal. Choose them for daytime, for lawn suits worn to work or errands, and for trousers-and-kameez silhouettes. For a formal evening they usually need at least a dupatta's coverage over them to hold their own.

Elbow Sleeve

Ends at or just above the elbow. This is the workhorse length of Pakistani daywear — cool enough for summer, covered enough for almost any daytime setting, and the length most lawn prints are designed around. The hemline lands at a natural narrowing of the arm, which is why it flatters most builds without effort.

Choose it when you want a suit that goes everywhere: office, bazaar, a dholki where you will be cooking and dancing in the same hour. Its one limitation is drama — an elbow sleeve has little room for the embellishment and border work that formal occasions expect, so it tends to stay a daytime length.

Three-Quarter Sleeve

Ends midway between elbow and wrist. This is the most forgiving length on the form and the one to default to when unsure. It slims the arm visually — the exposed wrist and forearm are the narrowest parts of the arm, and ending the sleeve there borrows their line. It also gives embroidery a proper canvas: a border at a three-quarter hem sits where hands, bangles, and mehndi already draw the eye.

It works across seasons in a way no other length manages: cool enough for a Karachi evening, warm enough under a shawl in a Punjab winter, correct at a milad and correct at a mehndi. In stiffer fabrics — raw silk, karandi — it holds a clean architectural line; in lawn and viscose it softens and moves. If you commission one formal suit a year and want it to serve widely, cut it three-quarter.

Full Sleeve

Ends at the wrist bone. Full sleeves are the most formal and most traditional length, and the default for winter, for bridal and heavy formal wear, and for anyone who prefers complete coverage year-round. A full sleeve in a heavy fabric — silk, velvet, jamawar — gives a garment gravity; the unbroken line from shoulder to wrist is what makes a formal kameez or an abaya read composed rather than casual.

Fit matters more here than at any other length. A full sleeve cut too loose in a soft fabric bunches at the wrist and looks accidental; cut slim, with a fastened cuff or a fitted taper, it looks deliberate. In summer fabrics, ask for a slightly looser cut through the forearm so air can move — a fitted full sleeve in August is a commitment. This is also the length to specify precisely on the form: state whether you want the hem at the wrist bone or covering it, because tailors split evenly on the default.

Matching Sleeve to Fabric

A short rule set worth keeping when weighing sleeve designs for a kameez. Lawn and soft cottons: cap, elbow, or three-quarter — a full lawn sleeve creases into a concertina by midday unless cut loose. Raw silk, karandi, and other structured cloth: three-quarter or full, where the fabric's body keeps the tube crisp. Chiffon and organza: full length, usually sheer — the transparency provides the coolness and the length provides the occasion. Velvet: full, always; a short velvet sleeve looks unfinished, like a coat that ran out of cloth.

Matching Sleeve to Occasion

Daytime and errands: cap or elbow. Office and daytime functions: elbow or three-quarter. Evening functions, dholkis, and mehndis: three-quarter, with embellishment doing the formal work. Shaadi formals, walimas, and winter evenings: full, in fabric with body. Religious gatherings: three-quarter or full, judged by the setting. None of these are laws, but each is the answer no one will question.

Embellishment Is a Sleeve Decision Too

Once length is settled, the sleeve becomes a canvas, and how much of it you fill is one of the quiet cost drivers on a commission. Embroidery and embellishment are priced by the labour they take, and labour scales with area and density — which means a fully worked full sleeve is among the more expensive stretches of cloth on a formal suit, while a single worked border at a three-quarter hem delivers most of the visual effect for a fraction of the work. If a quote surprises you, the sleeves are often where.

Two practical warnings sit alongside the cost. Dense work changes how a sleeve behaves: heavy embroidery on a light base stiffens the tube, so a chiffon or lawn sleeve loaded with work stops moving like chiffon or lawn — if you want both drama and drape, put the density at the hem and keep the field light. And worked sleeves do not alter well. Shortening a plain sleeve is a small job; shortening one with a border means losing the border or rebuilding it. Fix the length first, confirm it against your own arm at the first fitting, and only then let the work begin.

Decide the occasion, then the fabric, then let the sleeve follow both — that order prevents the common mistake of choosing a length you like in the abstract and a cloth that fights it.
